Plan To Have The University Of Rochester Run East High Moves Forward

The University of Rochester, along with leaders from the city school district and various labor unions say they have taken an important step toward the plan that will see the U of R manage East High School.

The plan submitted by the U of R anticipates doubling East High School graduation rates from the current 42 percent to 84 percent over a seven year period.

U of R President Joel Seligman sounds confident that they can meet this goal.

"I'm a teacher, I've been a teacher for a long, long time. And the most important thing I can say today is to the students at East High School, we believe in you, we believe that every student in this country is capable of success.”

The U of R's efforts will be led by Professor Steve Uebbing of the university's Warner School of Education. A final plan will be submitted to the state by December.

The state has been pushing for drastic changes at East High due to problems with academic performance.
