Pittsford incident results in hate crime charges

A Pittsford man has been indicted on charges related to a hate crime after he allegedly harassed a family near the Erie Canal in July.

52 year old Vincent Randazzese faces is accused of yelling racial obscenities at an Indian family, who also is from Pittsford, as they walked on the Erie Canal path.

Randazzese is accused of throwing the father’s phone into the canal. The charges Randazzese face include grand larceny and trying to prevent someone from calling for emergency help, as well as endangering the welfare of a child.

The indictment, which was handed up last week, says the various charges are related to a hate crime.

In a Facebook post, Town Supervisor Bill Smith said Pittsford “stands with the victims” and ssaid that “an ethnically-based assault on any one of us is an assault on the entire Pittsford community.”

Randazzese is scheduled to be back in court later this month.
