Pittsford Group Stands Together Against Racist Fliers

www.facebook.com/PittsFORWARD

A group of Pittsford residents hosted a walk Sunday afternoon in response to white supremacist fliers that have been appearing in various neighborhoods.

The fliers, which are pieces of paper reading "Make Rochester Great Again" with a link to a website promoting white supremacist ideals, were left in driveways in the Knickerbocker Road neighborhood in Pittsford about two weeks ago, and have spread to other neighborhoods since.

There is still no word on who is distributing the fliers.

Kendra Evans is a resident of Pittsford and one of the original organizers of PittsFORWARD, the group hosting the walk. She said she is proud to see the response her community has had to the fliers, and that they are willing to discuss the issue.

"I’m so proud that my community is not ignoring this. And I think that that’s the message. Its that we're not ignoring this, we're not accepting this. We believe in diversity and the value of all people. And therefore we will not tolerate this behavior in our town."

Even though her neighborhood didn’t receive the fliers, it’s still an issue she says, that hits close to home.

"It makes you feel unsafe in your own home; people are coming at night to your driveway. And I think thats what’s really important as a community, and why I personally feel very choked up every time I talk about it, is because this does matter to all of us. You know these messages are trash, and people have said "Just pick it up and throw it in the trash." But if one of my little children picked that up, the harm is done. I can’t just ignore it."

Evans hopes that PittsFORWARD grows as an organization to promote diversity at all times, and not just in response to these fliers.

The Unity Walk began at the Spiegel Community Center proceeded to Carpenter Park in the Village of Pittsford.
