A mixed used development project known as Pinnacle North officially opened on the North shore of Canandaigua Lake Monday.

The 21-acre project includes residential, commercial and open space right along the lake shoreline.

In addition to residencies, over 400 by the time all four phases of the project are complete, the development will include an Abbotts and Young Lion Brewing Company.

Canandaigua Mayor Ellen Polimeni says that the project is giving the city a sense of place.

"I think it adds a vibrancy to that area of the city. Of course we're in the midst of summer but I think in the winter it will do the same."

The project was able to move ahead after environmental cleanup efforts were completed in January. The cleanup was part of the states Brownfield Cleanup Program and consisted of evacuation and disposal of contaminated soil and the installation of utility trench plugs to prevent any further issues.

The residencies are already 70% occupied. Polimeni said the tenants she’s met are a combination of ages and backgrounds.

“I’ve met a millennial who works at the hospital here in Canandaigua and decided he wanted to be closer to his workplace. I’ve met families who are coming to be closer to their children. And there are several people who are retired."

Empire State Development is providing up to $2 million through a capital development grant that will support the next phase of the project, adding more one and two bedroom units a pool and additional commercial space. Construction on phase two will begin this fall. The total project cost is $120 million.
