Paychex Survey Shows A Rebound In Small Business Job Growth

A new monthly survey from Paychex and IHS  on job growth in small businesses showed a rebound in June.

That according to Paychex CEO Marty Mucci, who says that nationwide, the growth in small business jobs in June revered a decline that was seen in May.

“We had a nice bounce back in June, from a drop last month. It’s interesting that the small business index has sort of foreshadowed the bigger jobs report and so it will be interesting at the end of the week to see if the jobs report bounces back as well, we tend to be a leading indicator on that.”

Mucci says some of the strongest growth has been in the construction industry. Various services businesses, including personal care and pet care, did well also.

Mucci also says there’s been a strong increase in the number of part-time jobs.

He says that may be partly due to skittishness over changes in regulations as well as uncertainty over this year's elections.

“Overtime rules go into effect, expanded overtime rules on December 1st, you have the new family leave act, you have an election year, you have a number of things where small businesses are being careful in hiring more part time, than they are full time, to be sure they have the demand," Mucci told WXXI News.

In terms of geography, Mucci says the strongest job growth in small business was in the southeastern U.S. and also in the Seattle area.
