Ontario Beach Algae Removal Project Begins

@Maggie_Brooks

Monroe County officials are announcing the start of work on a project to help cut down on the algae problems at Ontario Beach.

The hot humid weather we're having this week makes you want to go to the beach...maybe take a swim..but that's not always possible at some of the local beaches due to problems with algae, which causes bad odors and also occasionally forces the temporary closing of the beaches for swimming.

Standing at Ontario Beach Park on Tuesday, County Executive Maggie Brooks said part of that beach will soon have a system of pipes that will help carry unwanted algae out of the swimming area.

“It will be piped through the pier. So there will be a pipe that goes right through the pier, it will go into the river. And then the natural flow of the river will take it out into the lake away from public areas. "

The piping work is expected to go on for about four weeks. The pier and swimming areas at Ontario Beach will remain open during the construction phase, except for some instances where safety could be compromised.

The project is being funded by a $400,000  state grant.
