Finger Lakes Community College and state lawmakers Friday officially took the wraps off a new facility in Geneva that will help promote research involving the wine industry.
The hope is it will not only educate students but promote a growing part of New York's economy.
The FLCC Viticulture and Wine Center is located in the Cornell Agriculture and Food Tech Park in Geneva, and it offers FLCC students the opportunity to transfer into Cornell's four year viticulture program. The facility has a teaching winery, lab space and a tasting bar.
It was built with the help of just over three point six million dollars in mostly state money. State Senator Mike Nozzolio says this viticulture center will help promote New York's wine industry.
"The research done at the experiment station at Cornell is a big reason why we have well over 250 wineries in New York State and over 100 in the Finger Lakes region. This viticulture center will help train the winery workers of the future."
Nozzolio says this viticulture center is the only one of its type on the East Coast.
