New York State Electric and Gas says it has been experimenting with its first concrete utility poles.
The new poles were installed in the Town of Patterson in Putnam County and the Town of Bethel in Sullivan County earlier this morning.
Officials say concrete poles have been used extensively in the southeast and in Ontario, Canada. They say with the sometimes harsh weather in New York State, they want to try the poles in this region since the poles do not require maintenance and have a strong record of withstanding wind, ice and heavy snow.
NYSEG has some customers in this part of the state and is owned by the Spanish company Iberdrola along with Rochester Gas and Electric.
