NYS not pursuing deal for California firm to move to Rochester

Officials with New York State’s economic development arm, Empire State Development, say that they are no longer pursuing a project with a California-based company called Photonica.

Last year, Governor Cuomo and other officials announced that Photonica, which is involved in photonics technology, planned to bring about 400 jobs to Canal Ponds Park and the Eastman Business Park.

But a statement from the state on Friday says that now that ESD has assumed the lead role on SUNY Poly’s economic development portfolio, they have concluded the Photonica deal does not meet the standards required for a significant investment of state funds.

When the story about corruption charges involving leadership at SUNY Poly broke last year, Photonica reportedly had said it would be re-evaluating its plans.

ESD does say that Avogy, a company whose investment in Rochester was announced the same day as Photonica, is still in contact with the state and having ongoing discussions regarding their project.
