ALBANY, N.Y. (AP & WXXI News) New York's 29 members of the Electoral College have cast their ballots for Hillary Clinton, who won the state despite not winning the race for the presidency against Republican Donald Trump.
The electors gathered Monday in the state Senate chambers in the Albany Capitol.
Electors in attendance included Gov. Andrew Cuomo, former President Bill Clinton and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, all three Democrats.
The electors broke out in applause when the results were read.
Dozens of protesters gathered outside to voice their concerns about the president-elect and to urge electors in other states to cast their ballots for Clinton or another candidate, even if their states voted for Trump.
Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren is one of the electors who voted for Clinton. This is Warren's statement:
Today I was honored to fulfill my duty as an Elector, following the overwhelming will of the people of Rochester and New York State, and cast my vote for Hillary Clinton for President of the United States. My city overwhelmingly supported Secretary Clinton in this past election, which came as no surprise to me, since Rochester has long stood for inclusion, diversity, equal rights and dignity for all citizens all of which were basic tenants of Hillary’s campaign. My hope for America is that these values and beliefs will be held dear by our next President and both Houses of Congress. I know, regardless of the tone set in Washington, Rochester will remain a city that values all of its citizens, not withstanding their race, religion, gender or sexual preference, because in our city we believe in every one of our citizens and we believe that it is our diversity that makes us stronger.
