NYS Ceremony Honors Two West Webster Firefighters
(AP) Two West Webster volunteer firefighters killed in the Christmas Eve
ambush outside Rochester were among the nine names added Tuesday to the New York
State Fallen Firefighters Memorial.
Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy joined other officials and firefighters from across the
state at a ceremony at the Firefighters Memorial at the Empire State Plaza in
downtown Albany. Bagpipers, a color guard and the playing of taps were part of
the event attended by colleagues, friends and relatives of Michael Chiapperini
and Tomasz Kaczowka.
The two Rochester-area firefighters were killed and two other members of the
West Webster Fire Department were wounded when a gunman opened fire on them
after setting his home ablaze Dec. 24.
``I have seen firsthand through the horrifying tragedy in Webster last year the
devastating effect that losing public safety officers has on a community,'' said
Duffy, a former Rochester police chief. ``We as New Yorkers forever honor these
firefighters, their families, and those that currently serve, and thank them
immeasurably for their service.''
