NY State Marketplace Adds 225,244 Previously Uninsured New Yorkers

The New York State of Health Marketplace added 225,244 newly insured people since the start of open enrollment.

Officials credit increased outreach efforts.

83,057 previously uninsured New Yorkers signed up on the state exchange for private insurance coverage between November 15th and December 20th.  142,187 people enrolled in Medicaid over the same period.

"The people who did not sign up last year are by definition hard to reach," said Rachel Klein, director of organizational strategy at FamiliesUSA

Klein explained this open enrollment was not marred with the technical difficulties experienced last year.

"Both on the national-healthcare.gov-as well as in the states that are running their own marketplaces, things are going fairly smoothly."

About 1.9 million newly insured people have signed up this year on the federal exchange, according to numbers released Tuesday by the U.S. department of health and human services.

Open enrollment continues through February 15th.
