Number Of Students With Norovirus Symptoms Rises At The University Of Rochester

Officials at the University of Rochester have upped the number of cases of students with Norovirus-like symptoms. The total number of students with those symptoms since the tracking of the illness began is 116, with most of those at the River Campus, and 5 cases at the Eastman School of Music.

The U of R says some of those 116 student are now healthy after dealing with the illness.

University officials, as well as the Monroe County Health Department, believe extensive sanitization work is the most effective way to address this outbreak. That work will continue through the weekend.

Hydrogen peroxide wipes are being distributed to residence halls at the River Campus.

In an earlier email to the university community, officials said that there has been a lot of work done to try and identify the source of the illness and they say there is absolutely no indication that it started with food or any of the dining facilities. The U of R is continuing to work with the Monroe County Health Department to try and identify a source.

Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes gastro-intestinal problems such as diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain. Symptoms last 1 to 3 days, and most people recover without treatment.
