An internationally known sculptor who makes his home in Rochester is getting ready for a very big presentation later this week.
Albert Paley has certainly created large works of art in the past. His metal sculptures, including one slated to be placed at the Memorial Art Gallery this year, are often quite massive.
But his latest venture, Paley on Park Avenue, is on a scale he really hasn't worked on before. It involves 13 large sculptures to be placed along Park Avenue in New York City, starting this coming weekend, and continuing into November.
Flatbed trucks are bringing the sculptures to New York later this week, and cranes will be needed to help get them in place.
The exhibit has been two and a half years in the making, and the efforts of Paley and his employees has been documented by WXXI-TV in a six part web series that features a new episode each Thursday at: http://interactive.wxxi.org/paleynyc. The fifth episode airs this week.
Paley says the series shows how these sculptures came together.
"It shot the actual fabrication, development of the sculptures in my studio. So the viewers were privy to the design phase, the fabrication, some of the shipping and loading."
Paley's crew will be installing the huge sculptures late Friday night into early Saturday morning. And RIT has just announced that one of the pieces, a nearly 20 foot tall sculpture known as Between the Shadows, will have a permanent home on the RIT campus this fall after the exhibition in New York City is over.
