New York State Still Beats Florida In Population...But Not By Much

New York State hasn't lost bragging rights yet when it comes to population levels compared to Florida, but it's getting close. The latest census data shows that New York is still the third most populous state behind California and Texas.  But Florida has only about 98-thousand fewer people than New York. New York's total population is about 19.6 six million people.

Kent Gardner is the chief economist for the Center for Governmental Research in Rochester. He says it's not unusual to see Florida gaining in population.

“Florida is a state without an income tax, it is a place that a lot of people choose to go to when they when they leave a high taxed state like new York , particularly for retirement, so I don’t think it’s at all a surprise."

But Gardner notes that taxes aren't the only issue that gets involved in deciding where people and businesses locate. Some experts expect that Florida will surpass New York as soon as next year in terms of population.

New York State is still the third most populous state behind California and Texas, but that distinction may not last long. Some experts say that Florida may have more residents in the next year or so. The census numbers that were just released  today (monday) show New York with about 19-point six million people. That's just 98-thousand more than Florida.

Kent Gardner is the chief economist for the Center for Governmental Research in Rochester.  He says one negative to losing population is what it does to our representation in Congress.

“we eventually will continue to lose representation in the house of representatives, we lost in the last census re-juggling, we’ll lose again probably in 2020 so it certainly has some implications In terms of our political ‘oomph ‘ nationwide’

Gardner says Florida has been gaining residents partly because of the fact it has no personal income tax. Although he says taxes are not the only factor involved in why people migrate from one state to another.
