New Theater Award Inspired by Philip Seymour Hoffman

npr.org

NEW YORK (AP) - A new theater prize inspired by Fairport native Philip Seymour Hoffman is seeking submissions that ``exhibit fearlessness.''

The Relentless Award is the largest annual cash prize in American theater awarded to a playwright in recognition of a new play. It has been launched with an annual prize of $45,000 and the promise of workshops.

Submissions will be taken starting Friday. This cycle's deadline is July 10, and the winner and three finalists will be announced Oct. 2.

Playwright David Bar Katz funded the prize from a settlement he reached with The National Enquirer over a false story about him and Hoffman. Katz was a collaborator and close friend of Hoffman's.

The 46-year-old Hoffman died last February after a drug overdose.

The Associated Press is one of the largest and most trusted sources of independent newsgathering, supplying a steady stream of news to its members, international subscribers and commercial customers. AP is neither privately owned nor government-funded; instead, it's a not-for-profit news cooperative owned by its American newspaper and broadcast members.
