Neuromedicine ICU at Strong

Strong Hospital is set to accept patients Tuesday to its new 12-bed neuromedicine ICU.

A staff trained in treating neurological disorders like strokes, seizures, and traumatic brain injury will be treating patients around the clock.

In the past, those patients would be scattered in other ICU's and receive care from fragmented teams.

That’s from Medical director Dr. Manju Markandaya, who says diseases that impact the brain and central nervous system have a unique set of challenges, not usually found in a traditional intensive care unit.

Dr. Markandaya adds the the rooms in the unit are large enough to accommodate family members who want to stay with their loved ones.

Family members are encouraged to take an active role in discussing treatment options, and often they have to speak on the patient's behalf.

Patients are scheduled to move into the new ICU on Tuesday.
