New affordable housing unveiled in Gates

State and local officials gathered in Gates Tuesday to mark the opening of Crerand Commons Phase II, which is a new affordable housing development. The complex adds 33 apartments near a similar housing development on Lyell Road.

Ruthanne Visnauskas is the New York State Homes and Community Renewal Commissioner.

She says there is still a big need for affordable housing across the state.

“ (There is) rent growth, so rents go up generally and people’s incomes don’t always go up so it makes people’s housing less affordable as time goes on so there is a huge demand,” she told WXXI News.

Visnauskas says having affordable housing near a quality school district like Spencerport is important to anti-poverty efforts.

“…that need improvements to the quality of affordable housing that’s there, and we also want to make sure we’re providing opportunities in places like Gates where you’re close to jobs, close to transportation and in a great school district; so it’s a balance, and we want to make sure that we do both.”

The new housing development costs nearly $10 million to build; the funding came from a variety of sources including state and county programs
