National Fire Prevention Week in Rochester

Alex Crichton

City officials have proclaimed October 4th through the 10th as National Fire Prevention Week in Rochester.

Mayor Lovely Warren joined Fire Chief John Schreiber on a platform from a bucket truck to make the proclamation Monday.

This comes as officials continue their investigation after a person was found dead after a fire early Sunday at a home on Kosciusko Street.

Chief Schreiber says this year's theme, "Here the Beep Where You Sleep: Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm."

"Always have a working smoke alarm in your home, if you hear a smoke alarm and discover your house is on fire, get out first, and then call 9-1-1."

Chief Schreiber says the most important thing to do if an alarm does go off, is get out of the building.

He says the department will install a free smoke alarm for residents who can't afford one.

People can call 3-1-1 for more information.
