Music Students Perform, Music Teachers Learn About Common Core

nyssma.org

Music education and the Common Core standards is one of the focal points during the annual New York State School Music Association's annual Winter Conference, underway in Rochester.

Chair Spokesperson for Public Relations and Information for NYSSMA, John Gallagher, says  hundreds of music students will be adjudicated during the event.

900 students will be performing, including students selected for the All State Instrumental and Vocal Jazz Ensembles.

Teachers, meanwhile, are learning about the new national core arts standards.

Gallagher argues that everything that the Common Core needs a student to do, they are learning through a music class.

Nancy Ditmer, Professor of Music Education at the College of Wooster, is the keynote speaker at this year's conference.

It runs through Sunday in downtown Rochester.
