Monroe County To Test New Emergency Notification System

Monroe County will begin testing a new emergency telephone notification system on Thursday. It's called " CodeRED ", and it sends telephone calls, text messages and emails to notify the public about important public safety information.

The testing will involve a pre-recorded message that will tell residents the call is a non-emergency test of the CodeRED system.  People who get the call will be encouraged to register  alternate phone numbers and email addresses to make sure they receive emergency notifications.

CodeRED replaces the 'hyper-reach' system that was previously used to relay public safety information. Monroe County has previously used that system to do things like alert residents of natural disasters, missing persons and criminal activity.

To sign-up for alerts, you can go to www.monroecounty.gov and click "Register My Cell Phone With 911" under the "How Do I" banner.
