Monroe County reports 1st flu death this season

Monroe County has its first reported death related to the flu for this season.

According to a report from the county’s health department, the death involved a person between the ages of 50 and 64 and it happened sometime between October 1 and December 30.

No other details about the person were available.  That quarterly report also said there were 607 confirmed flu cases, and 175 people who were hospitalized.

Earlier this month, Monroe County Health Commissioner Dr. Michael Mendoza noted that flu is currently circulating at a high level in the county, and said that it is still worthwhile getting vaccinated if you haven’t already.

The flu season typically begins in October and can last through May, with January and February being the peak months. Nationwide, flu is said to be causing widespread illness in 46 states.
