Monroe County and City of Rochester officials are announcing changes for the 911 system. Thursday they signed a contract with Frontier Communications for a new state-of-the-art system.

John Merklinger, the Director of Emergency Communicaitons, says the idea is to be able to allow a person using any kind of wired or mobile device to be able to contact 911 in an emergency.

"But think of the complexity of that, if somebody wants to send streaming video, if they want to send a picture, if they want to send an email, or any of those other pieces of technology, the kind of backbone that takes. This is one of those first steps to be able to allow that to occur.”

County Executive Maggie Brooks says that more than 70 percent of the calls coming into the 911 center are coming from cell phones.
