The latest numbers on job growth in New York State show a modest increase for the Rochester area in September.  The NYS Labor Department says the region saw an increase of 1,200 private sector jobs in September compared to a year ago.

State Labor Analyst Tammy Marino says the strongest hiring involved colleges and universities.

“Every year these employers typically hire more than 5,000 workers during the month of September; this year, these employers hired more than 7,000 new workers.

Marino says two of the weak spots were manufacturing and retail trade, but she expects those retail jobs to pick up as we get closer to the holidays.

Marino says there has been a lot of volatility in the local job numbers in recent months, but she says other data she has been looking at show generally steady job growth over the last year.

“With this most recent data, the September numbers, the estimates look a little bit more reasonable and employment rose modestly over the past 12 months and that really looks like a much more normal  and reasonable pattern of hiring," Marino told WXXI News.
