Moderate drought for much of the region

The U.S. Drought monitor reports much of Monroe, Orleans and Niagara counties are experiencing a "moderate drought" right now.

The data indicate a meteorological and hydrological drought because of rainfall deficits

From an agricultural standpoint, at least an inch of water is needed in the next week or so, or there will be significant impact on non-irrigated crops, such as corn.

That's according to agricultural specialist at Monroe Community College, Bob King.

He says a significant cost for growing crops is water, and farmers always count on Mother Nature to provide that.

"If, the timing of the crops is such that, farmers and growers are able to keep up with the water requirements, and the temperatures tend not to be real extreme, I think we'll still be okay with fresh market vegetables," he said.

Some rain is in the forecast starting Saturday night.

King's tip for backyard growers?

Prioritize what plants to water, and water early in the morning or in the evening, and try to apply the water to the base of the plant.
