Summer school for some Rochester School District sixth through eighth grade students will include a lesson in financial literacy.
It's a joint project between Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Rochester (CCCRS) and the Horizons program at the Warner School of Education.
CCCRS marketing director Lynette Baker says not many schools offer financial lessons for students in their regular curriculum. "We've seen a lot of research and studies that show that most children get that knowledge from their parents. If their parents have never been taught how to do it they could be teaching them the wrong way or teaching them their bad habits, also."
Baker says low-income students who sign up for the financial literacy class as part of their summer school program will learn the basics of budgeting and money management, but also lessons in wants versus needs.
The program was funded this year by a grant from M & T Bank.
