Med Students Call for Single-Payer System

Teach-ins, rallies, and candle light vigils are taking place today at more than 30 medical school campuses across the country.

Students are holding a "National Day of Action" to call for Medicare for all Americans.

Justin Pegueros, a student at Albany Medical College, says a single-payer health care system is the best option.

"If I only have to deal with one insurance company, then I can focus on providing the best care possible to my patient,” he said. “Right now, with the multi-tiered and multi-payer system, we as professionals have to figure out the best costing treatment for patients instead of the best treatment for patients.

Students say they want to call attention to the millions of Americans who remain uninsured and underinsured under the current U.S. health care system.

Demonstrations are planned today in New York at Cornell University, Albany Medical College, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai, New York University School of Medicine, SUNY Downstate and Weill Cornell Medical College.
