Monroe Community College trustees have approved a tuition increase of $180 for full time, in-state students for the coming school year.
The four percent increase raises tuition to $4,280 a year.
MCC officials attribute the increase to a predicted decline in enrollment and the result loss of state aid.
College president Anne Kress says the drop in enrollment is being seen around the country.
“We also know that nationally, enrollment in higher education, both in two and four year colleges, is trending downward. So I think part of it is helping students to understand the return on the investment that they’ll receive when they come to a college like MCC.
Kress says they are also trying to hold the line on expenses, with the new budget coming in 3.5 percent less than the previous year.
The college also announced a new program , called the MCC Guarantee, which will hold tuition flat for students who complete their studies in two years and meet some other requirements.
