Mark Assini Launches Congressional Campaign

TWC News

Republican Town Supervisor Mark Assini made it official on Tuesday night: He is running for Congress again next year against longtime Democratic Rep. Louise Slaughter of Fairport.

Assini kicked off his campaign at the Italian-American Community Center in Gates.  Assini ran against Slaughter in 2014, when he lost to the incumbent by just under  900 votes.

Assini told the gathering at the community center that there needs to be less partisan bickering in Washington, and he also said Congress must help address the issue of poverty in Rochester.

He also promised to limit himself to two terms in Congress, and according to the D&C  pledged to avoid negative campaign ads.

Slaughter, who is seeking a 16th term representing the 25th Congressional District, which includes most of Monroe County, issued a statement saying that she will run for office based on her record, and she cited for various federal investments she has fought for including a photonics institute, adding jobs to Eastman Business Park and building a new train station.
