Marina Project Underway

After several years of planning, local, state and federal officials officially broke ground Thursday on the Port of Rochester Marina Project.

The plan calls for a new marina, along with additional roadways, commercial and residential space on the Genesee River in Charlotte.

Mayor Tom Richards says he's happy the project is finally starting, and it represents a long-term investment by the city in Charlotte.

State Senator Joe Robach says this project will mean jobs, higher property values and increased foot traffic for area businesses.

And resident Kathy Strauss from the neighborhood group "Team Charlotte," says this is awesome for both Charlotte and the City of Rochester.

The project is expected to produce tons of debris.

Port manager Mark Gregor says some of the fill will be taken to general fill sites, while some of the slag from a former foundary and iron works will be taken to a site on Lexington Avenue near Edison High School.

He says the slag has been tested and is safe for reuse.

Gregor says trucking access will be restricted to avoid Edison.

Officials hope to use about half of the fill from the Marina Project for the Inner Loop Project.

The Marina Project is estimated to cost 20 million dollars, and should be completed by the spring of 2015.
