It was nine years ago Thursday that a Rochester woman was beaten by a mob and stabbed to death in broad daylight at the intersection of Dewey Avenue and Driving Park.
Latasha Shaw was a food service worker at the University of Rochester and the mother of four. Shaw was coming to the aid of her 12-year old daughter who was involved in a fight when she was attacked.
"This happened nine years ago and I feel we have not made any headway with violence in our community," said Dawn Marshall-Hosier, executive vice president of SEIU Local 200 United.
Members of the United Healthcare Workers union hosted a "stop the violence" march and rally at that intersection on Thursday evening. Marshall-Hosier says the event is in remembrance of Latasha, but it's also focused on the continued violence in Rochester and other cities around the country.
"There's something that has to be said about us wanting to hurt each other. All of this needs to stop, because all it will do is destroy our children's future if we can’t reign this violence and disrespect in."
Marshall-Hosier worked with Shaw at the University of Rochester for about ten years. She said Latasha always took time to speak up for people who had no voice.
