A familiar face on the Rochester Board of Education wants to bring the theme of "our city, our future" to a new job as a member of Rochester City Council.

Malik Evans has announced his intention to seek one of the five at-large seats on Council.

He's been on the city school board since 2003, serving as president from 2008 to 2013.

Evans says he would focus on neighborhoods, jobs and youth as a member of council.

"So much of what I've seen at the Rochester City school District is just a symptom to some of the challenges that we have in our community, but also some of the opportunities we have. We have opportunities to improve our city, and I want to be a part of that conversation," he said.

Evans says it's important to focus on the external forces that impact our schools.

"I'm looking forward to the campaign, and earning the support of the voters, and hearing their concerns," he said.

His term on the school board expires in 2019, but if Evans is elected to Council, there would be four seats up for election on the board of education.
