Main Post Office To Be Named For Fallen Soldier

Congresswoman Louise Slaughter says that President Obama has signed legislation which designates the main post office on Jefferson Road in Henrietta as the “Specialist Theodore Matthew Glende Post Office."

Glende was killed in Afghanistan on July 27, 2012, at the age of 23, when his unit came under enemy fire.

The Rochester area man was killed while helping the unit’s medic and wounded comrades take shelter.

Members of his unit said that Glende saved the lives of five of his fellow soldiers in the attack. He was posthumously promoted from Private First Class to Specialist for his actions.

Glende graduated from McQuaid Jesuit High School in 2007 and enlisted in the U.S. Army while enrolled at Niagara University. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, which is based out of Vincenza, Italy.

“Theodore’s bravery saved the lives of five of his fellow soldiers, and while nothing we can do will ever assuage the grief of his loved ones, this designation will be a small token of our gratitude for his valiant service and will help to keep his memory alive for future generations,” Slaughter said.

Senator Charles Schumer said recently that he was also asking the Postal Service to agree to allow signage on the “Specialist Theodore Matthew Glende Post Office” that would allow the name of the post office to be displayed on exterior signs.
