A local physician has been recognized for his work in HIV care.

The State Department of Health AIDS Institute has named Dr. William Valenti the 2013 recipient of the Linda Laubenstein Award for excellence in HIV care.

Dr. Valenti is co-founder of the Community Health Network, now known as Trillium Health.

He has been involved in HIV care and state, national, and global HIV policy initiatives since the early 1980s.

The award is given each year to recognize doctors who were there early in the AIDS epidemic and who have demonstrated leadership in the community and compassion for patients.

The award is named in memory of Dr. Linda Laubenstein, a pioneering physician who treated many of the country's first AIDS patients.
