Local protesters are holding a rally today, on what is known as Equal Pay Day, the day they say women have worked the four extra months needed to match what their male counterparts earned.
Jaclyn Richard, the incoming president of the Rochester chapter of the National Organization for Women, believes pay equity will happen, but it requires action now.
"As we are evolving with more women lawyers and more women in medical school, more women running for president, more women taking office - obviously it's not equal yet, we're still shaking up the Senate and the House - I think it's going to happen, but I don't want to wait until I die. I want to make some noise now."
The local NOW chapter is staging a protest against pay inequality on East Avenue tonight between 5 and 6 in front of Spot Coffee. They're asking motorists to honk if they think it's not okay for women to earn 78 cents for every dollar a man earns.
The organization is urging New York legislators to pass legislation that would, among other things, increase the damages that an individual could collect in a pay discrimination lawsuit to 300 percent of unpaid wages.
