Local help for DACA recipients

The Legal Aid Society is helping local Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA recipients, renew their status before their work permits expire.

The government is allowing some recipients to renew their status, if their work permit expires between September 5th of this year and March 5th, 2018, they can still file for renewal of DACA

Wedade Abdullah, Immigration Program Director at the Legal Aid Society, says attorneys will be available Monday during a clinic at at the University of Rochester to guide people through the process.

"We are providing help with the renewal application and with the filing of the application.  But if people want to come down and talk to one of the immigration attorneys in the Legal Aid Society, just about their immigration issues, we will be happy to do so, too," she said.

Those eligible to renew their DACA status must file their application by October 5th.

"We're hoping that there will be some action by Congress, something more permanent than what DACA is, a path to permanent legalization for the children who were brought here without the proper paperwork, and who have lived here their entire lives and only know the United States as home," said Abdullah.

The Legal Aid Society is holding a clinic for DACA recipients Monday from 9am to 2pm at the Burgett Intercultural Center at the University of Rochester.

A similar clinic was held earlier Thursday.
