Local Contingent at Fight for $15 Rally

Busloads of people from the Rochester area headed to Albany Tuesday to support a $15 dollar minimum wage.

Among them, members of local 1199 Healthcare workers union, including David Heath, who says they’re supporting the governor’s efforts to hike the minimum wage.

“I mean that’s how important it is right now, with this fight for 15, you know, change the minimum wage.”

The governor’s proposal is included in the Assembly’s version of the bill, but is not included in the Senate version.

Heath says people can’t really make it on the current minimum wage.

“This fight is not about passing a budget, it’s about changing lives. So we’re going to continue to just fight no matter what.  We want it passed, the governor wants it passed.  And we are the voice of the people.”

A recent report by the Empire Center for Public Policy indicates that raising the minimum wage to $15 dollars an hour would lead to hundreds of thousands of job losses, higher prices and higher taxes.
