Local Colleges Take Steps to Prevent Flu Outbreak

www.well.blogs.nytimes.com

Students are returning to Rochester-area college campuses following winter break, and officials say they're taking steps to prevent an outbreak of the flu.  At SUNY Geneseo, Dr. Steven Radi, Medical Director of the Health and Counseling Center, says flu shots are being offered for students. Communication has also gone out reminding students to take preventive measures such as hand-washing, covering their mouth when coughing or sneezing, using hand sanitizer dispensers located around campus, and getting plenty of sleep and good nutrition.

Dr. Radi says a number of students returning this past week have come in to the health center to get their vaccination. He says the procedures being followed are the same that were enacted in 2009, during the H1N1 swine flu epidemic.

The University of Rochester and RIT have each reported just several cases of confirmed influenza on campus. Both schools are following plans similar to those at SUNY Geneseo, emphasizing vaccinations, prevention, and good communication between students and campus health officials.
