The host of a nationally broadcast show on the environment says society doesn't have a lot of time left to take strong action in dealing with climate change.
Steve Curwood, who hosts the radio program Living on Earth, is speaking Monday night at 7:00 at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. He says we are facing a climate emergency, and he believes we only have a decade or two to make the kinds of changes that are necessary.
“Both in terms of reducing the emissions that are causing the problem, but frankly we’re already down the road, so we have to smartly adapt to it. There will be stronger storms, there will be storm surges, there will be droughts, there will be excess water, we need to get together as a society, and understand what's coming and work together, we can't do it individually."
For people who want to know what they can do, Curwood says one of the most important things is to vote and be part of the political process.
“Participate in civil society; talk with your neighbors, your local government, the state government, the national government. Yes, you can save water, yes, you can drive a Prius, but it’s much more important to participate so that we can make this change as a society, because we can’t do it alone.”
Curwood says one advantage to living in this region is the natural water resources we have, compared to places like California.
