Legal Aid Society closely following changing immigration rules

The Legal Aid society of Rochester, which represents people from all backgrounds, has been fielding many phone calls from people concerned about the new immigration rules.

That's according to the director of the immigration program, Wedade Abdullah, who says she's most concerned about the unpredictability of the enforcement of the rules, compared to the policies under the previous administration.

"The new procedures seem to be more scattershot to me, and are targeting people charged with crimes only, not convicted," she said.

Under the new rules, immigrants could be subjected to rapid deportation if they are charged or convicted or are even suspected of a crime.

Abdullah says the new rules also leave a lot of discretion to the individual officers, as well.

She notes there's a growing uncertainty among people here who are not citizens.

"Even people who are here lawfully, students, permanent residents, people on work visas, they're not sure if this enforcement applies to them as well.  They think that they are targets simply by being, in reference to the country, not citizens," she said.

Her advice to immigrants?

Stay out of trouble, and if people have any questions about their immigration status, they can seek help through the Legal Aid Society.
