Layoff notices go out to some Xerox employees

Xerox says a number of employees including some in Webster were notified Thursday that they are being laid off.

The company says the notices went out to some employees in Webster, Canada and throughout the U.S.

No specific numbers were released, but the layoffs in New York State were below threshold levels required by the labor department when those numbers must be reported.

The workers affected are primarily in the company’s internal IT operations and include IT software engineers, systems engineers, program managers and associated support as well as finance managers

A Xerox statement says this is part of its restructuring activities as part of its initiative to optimizing its operations globally.

The company says that “Every decision is a difficult one and we understand the impact on individuals.”

Webster Town Supervisor Ron Nesbitt says even if the number of layoffs aren’t particularly large, it’s always concerning when jobs are lost. Still, he says Xerox remains an important part of the town’s economy.

“They’re the largest paying taxpayer in the Town of Webster. I constantly have meetings with them about some of their vacant buildings, I have a meeting with them next week looking to see how they’re going to fill them up or if we can outsource the buildings to somebody else; bring other employment back into town."
