Latest Paychex | IHS Small Business Jobs Index Shows Slow, Steady Growth

The latest Paychex | IHS Small Business Jobs Indexwas relatively unchanged from the month before.

But Paychex CEO Marty Mucci says those July numbers are still a positive, because overall, the small business clients surveyed by his company have been seeing slow, steady growth.

Mucci says employment growth was stronger last year at this time, and now things have settled down a bit.

"I think what happened is we still had kind of a peak of jobs being added to small businesses and now it's kind of steadied out, but it's still above 100 consistently in our index which means the growth rate for employment is higher than it was in our base year, which was 2004. "

Mucci says the central portion of the country and the northwest have seen the strongest growth lately. The northeast has lagged behind other parts of the country.

Mucci says among the sectors of the economy seeing job growth in July were the leisure and hospitality industries.
