The Rochester area saw more job growth in April. The NYS Labor Department says that this region saw 5800 more private sector jobs in April compared to a year ago.
State labor analyst Tammy Marino says that another positive development was that the latest job growth was generally spread over a number of sectors.
"If we look back at last year most of our job growth was concentrated primarily in education and health care. However this year, we have a much more diverse set of employers that are hiring.”
Marino says areas like professional, technical and recreational jobs also saw growth in staffing.
Manufacturing has been a weak job in recent years, but Marino says that situation is improving.
"Over the past decade, our manufacturing sector has been especially hard hit, however, with the downsizing of Eastman Kodak slowing to a trickle and a growing number of employers beginning to expand, these numbers have begun to stabilize in recent months."
The statewide unemployment rate in April was 5.7 percent. That was down from 6.5 percent in April of last year. The Rochester unemployment numbers will be out next week.
