Lakeshore Flood Warning for Monroe and Orleans Counties

The National Weather Service has issued a lakeshore flood warning for Monroe and Orleans Counties from 5pm Sunday to 8am Monday.

The weather service says that the combination of high lake levels and wave action may worsen flooding in low lying areas along the Lake Ontario Shoreline.

A ‘beach hazard’ statement has also been issued, meaning that there is a high swim risk due to ‘threatening waves and currents.’  That statement takes effect 2pm Sunday and runs through the evening.

Late Sunday afternoon, Monroe County Exec. Cheryl Dinolfo issued this statement:

Swimming at Ontario Beach Park is in the process of being closed due to high waves increasing risks to swimmers.

The County's Office of Emergency Management will be closely monitoring the shoreline for flooding and will provide guidance and assistance to residents as conditions require.

Residents and businesses along the shoreline of Lake Ontario and its bays should be watchful and call 911 if a dangerous situation develops. Residents should also use caution around electricity if water floods or infiltrates structures.
