The latest numbers from the NYS Labor Department show a strong increase in private sector jobs in the Rochester area for the month of June. There was an increase of nearly 11,000 jobs in June compared to this time last year.

State Labor Analyst Tammy Marino says even with some steady increases in local employment in recent months, June had a particularly good showing.

“If we look around ,you’ll see all kinds of economic activity going on and all of this activity means opportunities,  in fact, this summer is beginning to look like the best job market that we’ve had since the end of the recession.”

Marino says much of the increase involved seasonal positions, such as those in construction and restaurants and amusement parks, but she says other parts of the local economy also saw growth.

“Professional and technical jobs were up over the year and of course, we’re still seeing continued growth in health care and private education.”

The statewide unemployment rate was 5.5 percent in June down from 6.3 percent in June of 2014. The Rochester jobless rate will be out next week.
