Irondequoit looking at energy alternative for residents

The town of Irondequoit is considering a new way to provide electricity to its residents, with the goal of lowering utility bills and encouraging the use of renewable energy.

Town Supervisor Dave Seeley says the program is called Community Choice Aggregation, or CCA.

And it has been proven to provide a lower rate for electricity.

"Municipalities can work together or on their own to contract with an administrator who uses the bulk purchasing power to leverage a more predictable, ideally lower fixed electricity rate for residents," he said.

And that would become the default electricity product for the resident.

Rochester Gas and Electric would continue to provide the infrastructure.

RG&E would continue to provide the infrastructure and deliver the electricity.

"The utility still exists because utilities make the money on the delivery charge, but it's been proven to allow for a more predictable and proven lower rate for electricity," Seeley said.

Seeley says the other benefit of CCA is that it would further promote the use of renewable energy, with the goal in Irondquoit of providing a product that is 100 percent renewable.

He says if the town moves forward with the program, residents can opt out at no charge at any time.

WXXI has reached out to RG&E for reaction to the CCA program.
