Investigation Continues Of Officer-Involved Shooting Incident

TWC News

Rochester Police have released more details about an officer-involved shooting at Seneca Park that happened early Tuesday evening.

At about 5 p.m., authorities say an RPD officer saw a vehicle that had been reported stolen. They say the officer tried to take the driver into custody, but the driver ran and there was a short foot chase.

Chief Michael Ciminelli says the officer caught up to the suspect, but the man resisted arrested and got back in the car he was driving. The officer tried to remove the suspect from the vehicle, but Ciminelli says the officer was leaning into the car trying to take the man into custody, but the suspect drove forward, dragging the officer and at least one tire of the car ran over the officer.

Officials say during this incident, the officer fired one shot, striking the suspect who suffered a non-life threatening injury. The suspect drove off, but was apprehended by responding officers before he left Seneca Park.

The officer was treated at the hospital and released. The suspect was also taken to the hospital.

Charges have not been determined yet. As is standard procedure in cases like this, the officer, who will be out of work for a while to recover from his injuries, will be assigned to administrative duties when he returns to work pending an internal investigation.
