Monroe County Deputies have charged a Town of Sweden man with assault following a hunting accident early Monday evening.

Authorities were called to Covell Road in that down for a report of a man who was shot in the stomach.

The victim, 32 year old Robert Williams of Bergen, was taken to Strong Hospital where he is listed in guarded condition.

Deputies say the man they eventually charged, 42 year old Brett Blackburn, tried to render first aid to Williams. Blackburn’s son was also there.

Deputies say that Brett Blackburn and his son were on their property hunting coyotes when they saw movement in the field, and Brett fired his rifle and then heard someone yell and went over to help the victim.

Blackburn now faces a second degree assault charge.

A spokesman for the Sheriff's Office says Williams has permission to search property in the area for deer antlers.
