More than 1,800 people participated in the 25th annual Manning & Napier Tour de Cure bicycling event Saturday at the Xerox campus in Webster.

Officials say more than $900,000 has been raised for national and  local diabetes research, education and advocacy.

Richard Yates is chief legal officer for Manning and Napier, and he helps organize the annual event.

Yates says one of the most important aspects of this event is raising awareness about diabetes.

“You can see your outreach in action and cheer people along.  And if we have employees who have that [diabetes] themselves or in their family, it’s also creates a great connection point and really builds morale," he told WXXI News.

Yates says this is a real team building effort.  He says there were about 130 teams, many of them representing area companies and organizations.

The event included a wide variety of bike routes, from three miles to 100 miles, and for the first time, there was a  three-mile walk.

This year, organizers set a goal to have the Rochester Tour de Cure become the  number one tour in the United States.

The full results of the fundraising will not be tallied until after every Tour has been held.
