Homebuilders Optimistic Construction Will Pick Up

npr.org

The Commerce Department reports a 2.5 percent decline in home building in the US in March compared to a year ago, but the Rochester market remains steady.

That's according to the CEO for the Rochester Homebuilders Association, Rick Herman, who admits our long, cold winter did slow things down.

"New home building has been steady, however with the harsh winter we had, we did see a slowdown for the last three months or so," says Herman.

He says a lot of new builds have been stalled as a result of the winter.

But there are reasons to be optimistic.

He says the buying public is back into model homes, interest rates continue to be low and job growth continues.

Herman anticipates a slow first quarter, but they will end up with a more than adequate first half of the year when they tally their numbers after the second quarter.
